Several walks of 2025 had been wet ones so when Mark suggested Wet Sleddale, another outlying Wainwright walk, I was not too sure as it had the word ‘Wet’ in it…. It was tricky finding where to park – don’t trust Apple maps(!) But we found a nice spot at the side of Wet Sleddale Reservoir. It was Steve, Mark, James and me and the weather was clear and nice. Our first hill was Sleddale Pike. We passed via The Lunch House on the way (where upper-class pheasant killers go for lunch in the season), so we had lunch there, and carried on to towards the top, passing a large rock called Gray Bull.
From this summit, we made our way to Great Saddle Crag, then Ullthwaite Rigg. The walk to the latter was quite wet and without a path and the summit has to be the most boring one I have scaled, just a solitary rock for the cairn. We did see a herd of at least 100 deer, though, and that was a lovely sight.
On the way back we visited Sleddale Hall, where they filmed Withnail and I, then back down to the reservoir to the car and stopping at the Greyhound Pub in Shap for a Golden ale.
