For people of Preston, Fylde and Wyre in Lancashire, Beacon
fell is famous. It is a go-to place for getting away from it all, for picnics,
to take the dog for a wander, with the kids, with the ageing grandparents. This
little hill (873 feet) may well be the very first hill climbed for a lot of
people who live nearby.
And this was our August hill, on a wet afternoon, just
Steve, me and Jake. There is no real route one must stick to, not like there is
atop and mountain in a lonely Scottish glen; one can find their way to the
summit quite easily as there are lots of paths there and the top can be reached
in ten minutes, or in an hour, all depending on which way to want to go: perhaps
pass the pond, or saunter through the woods (of which there are plenty on this
fair fell). There are also carved wooden structures dotted about for kids to
look out for, such as a crocodile, a snake and an owl.
We decided to park up and make our way to the summit, then
did a circuit o the fell, visiting the pond and having a look at the top again.
The views are of Fairsnape, Longidge Fell, then over at Morcambe Bay.
Back down, how about a look at the visitor centre and grab a
brew?
Well worth the visit of you are in the area…
