Welcome...

There are several blogs on the internet detailing other people’s walks up hills and mountains in the UK, there are many fine pages showing routes up various fells, many of which will be better than this blog. So, why bother reading my blog? No reason at all, so I guess you might as well move on…

You still here? Cool...let's see...

Hill wandering summary of 2021

A bit late, I know, and not the usual individual walks here, but an overview of 2021…

With never ending covid troubles and other personal things, getting to the hills was not as plentiful in 2021, but I did get there and make the most of it.

In April, Jack and I had a trip to Fairsnape in Lancashire’s Trough of Bowland. This is a great place to be, like a mini ‘Lakes’ in my view. We started at Fell Foot and had a very steep ascent to the right of Parlick, which we skirted before heading up the Fairsnape. It was a very cold day and rain appeared as we descended.

In June we had a weekend in Keswick, and Andy and Alec Joined Jack and I up Skiddaw. Readers of this blog will know that this is one of ‘our’ hills, which we climb often. We started from Low Briary, headed along the old railway path to Keswick and made our way up hill. This is a terrific walk, and afterwards we had a few beers to celebrate.

On the same trip, Amy, Max and I went up Latrigg, taking the same journey as the day before, but branching off right to the hill, then meandering back down.

In August, Amy and I went up Tarn Crag in the Lakes. Starting off in Grasmere, we walked across Easedale, to the tarn. Then we made a beeline for Tarn Crag, through bracken and scree. At the top, we spent a while deciding which summit was the top, then headed back down, obtaining a very expensive beer on the way back to the car.

In October, Andy, Mark, Steve and I have a Scottish trip to Killin. A soggy and foggy break, Andy and I headed up Meall nan Tramachan on the first day, starting off at the Ben Lawers Car Park, taking an obvious route upwards. It was a nice walk, even through it was misty.

The next day, Andy, Mark and I went up Ben Lawers and Beinn Glas. Again, we started at the Ben Lawers car park, getting a lift off Steve. These two hills are in the opposite direction to yesterday’s hill and we had fanciful ideas of doing all five along this ridge. Sadly, the rain and wind and mist had other ideas. On the way up two people said it was too windy for Ben Lawers but we had to see for ourselves. We ascended Beinn Glass after what seemed a lifetime, then managed Ben Lawers – the 10th highest Munro. We came back the same way, but skirted the edge of Beinn Glas…

So, what of 2022? Having done just ten in total in ’21, the aim is to do many more, along with a long break in Scotland and probably Skiddaw again…
