Welcome...

There are several blogs on the internet detailing other people’s walks up hills and mountains in the UK, there are many fine pages showing routes up various fells, many of which will be better than this blog. So, why bother reading my blog? No reason at all, so I guess you might as well move on…

You still here? Cool...let's see...

June 19: Nicky Nook

I can’t begin to guess just how many times I have been up Nicky Nook. Just 40 minutes drive away from me, it was once me and my kids ‘go to’ walk, in all seasons. The kids are older now, but still come along occasionally. But guess what? It’s a fine, fine walk and it is the kind of walk you can make as long or as short as you want.

It is near to Scorton in Lancashire’s Area of Outstanding Beauty, The Trough of Bowland. If you drive up Tithe Barn Lane just as you enter Scorton and then turn left on Higher Lane and drive along this narrow road to what is obviously the start of the hill, and park anywhere you can find, you then put on the rucksack and boots and start heading up.

But you can start in Scorton itself if you like.

It is quite a steep little walk to begin with, getting the blood pumping, but the walk to the top and the trig point won’t take you too long. You can then carry on along to a wall then turn right to the reservoir or walk straight across for a longer day. I chose the latter this time, with Jake in tow. I then found a bench to eat cheese sandwiches, enjoying the day as Jake nicked some of the cheese. I then got up, turned left and through trees, passing the reservoir and streams to my left. This is a pleasant walk and quite a nice cool down on a hot day. Turn right over a stile, then back onto the main road. This is a peaceful road walk to where you parked the car. A short but rewarding walk…
