February 2020 saw Britain beaten by storms: Storm Ciara battered and bruised and Storm Dennis smashed and slashed… It did not seem likely that there would be a February walk, but whilst off work for a few days there was window of opportunity and Orrest Head called. Word of warning, though: it’s not wise to trust ‘sunshine and showers,’ as this generally means rain, and lots of it.
We parked up in Windermere and followed the
road to the main road and crossed over to where there is a sign that says ‘Footpath
to Orrest Head’ and a solitary hand pointing the way. It was drizzling at this
time, so not too bad, promising even.
Our ascent to the top of the hill was
pretty quick. But here is where the rain began to lash. I’d like to describe the
views here, but sadly cannot, due to the rain and visibility. We walked across
the hill and onto the other side. Fields and paths that are usually dry, were
like lakes and rivers. We took to the road and turned left, meandering back
towards Windermere through the woods, the rain getting worse.
Back at Windermere, we found a pub and got a coffee to warm
us up. A wet day, but fun all the same.
