Welcome...

There are several blogs on the internet detailing other people’s walks up hills and mountains in the UK, there are many fine pages showing routes up various fells, many of which will be better than this blog. So, why bother reading my blog? No reason at all, so I guess you might as well move on…

You still here? Cool...let's see...

December Hill: Rivington Pike and Winter Hill

The December walk took us to nearby Rivington Pike and Winter Hill. Not far from Bolton, the walk started near to Rivington Hall Barn. This time it was Me, Steve and James, plus three pooches: (almost) ever present Jake and Roco were joined with Frank’s dog Bailey. It was a bitterly cold day, with a spot of ice and frost lying, but the walk was packed with people as the day was clear.

We took one of many paths to the top of the hill, passing Pigeon Tower, before reaching the top of the Pike, with its own tower. We then made our way across the boggy (thankfully frosty) path to Winter Hill for a sandwich. Akin to a scene in a Bond movie, the summit here is strange (TV masts, buildings, desolate), but no sign of 007 or Ursula Andress come think of it, just a few walkers and mountain bikers.

We retraced our footsteps back towards Rivington Pike and then returned via the Japanese Gardens and Seven Arched Bridge. It had been my first walk up Rivington Pike (bagged Winter Hill before) and I was surprised at how much there was: towers, gardens, tarns and bridges. A little gem of a walk.
