It’s hard to recall just how many times I have been up the
Langdale Pikes, with many friends and family over the years. Its distinctive
shape can be seen from around the Lakes, most especially on Windemere I guess.
Jack’s Rake is a formidable scramble up the face of Pavey Arc, which I have
scaled many a time, but not on this occasion.
Andy, Steve and I decided on a camping trip to the
Langdales, quite a small area but a few good places to get a pint! If in the
area a visit to the Old Dungeon Ghyll Hotel is a must, just for the experience
of being in a 150 or so year old pub with so much history. Many a hill wanderer
has stepped through its doors after a long day’s toil up a nearby mountain.
Due to Steve’s bad hip (at the time) it was just Andy I who
climbed the Langdales that day, but just as we were to set out, disaster
struck! The front of one of the heals of my trusty old Merrells came loose and
was yawning open like that of a snappy crocodile! A quick repair job ensued – sticky
tape wrapped around and around. And around. It did the job, just, but sadly that was that
pair of boots last hurrah.
We set off from behind the car park and made out way to Stickle
Tarn. Then we headed up the right side of Pavey Arc. Bit of a slog, but these old
bones didn’t fancy Jack’s Rake. We completed most the other hills there, save
for maybe Thunacar Knott (but hey, done at before anyway). The paths are well made out though for those
who wish to do all five Wainwrights. We descended at the side of Harrison
Stickle. The rain began to fall then and we had a soggy pint in the pub below.

i have a video of this day too!
